Why Chelsea need more than a new goalkeeper to be title challengers

Just five hours after having his much-anticipated signing confirmed by Chelsea, Emiliano Martinez was walking out at Stamford Bridge to play for his new team against Brighton.

Having been thrown straight into the starting XI by manager Xabi Alonso, however, it quickly became clear that he alone cannot solve their defensive problems.

The 33-year-old said he was "fit and ready" to play despite his £7.5m signing from Aston Villa being announced so close to kick-off.

In reality, the Argentina international had already trained with his new team-mates after completing his move before Friday's registration deadline, with public confirmation delayed for marketing reasons.

There was little blame attached to the goalkeeper for any of the three goals conceded in their 4-3 victory, unlike on Monday, when Robert Sanchez was clearly at fault for the first goal, and arguably the second, in Chelsea's 3-2 win at Fulham.

Either way, that is now five goals conceded in two games. Their impressive new-look attack is the reason, despite the leaky defence, they have a 100% record nonetheless.

"A win is a win," Martinez told Sky Sports after his debut. "I know it wasn't a perfect game. But in the end, winning and moving on is what we need.

"I am here for a reason. The front three is amazing. When we go forward, we can hurt teams. We had a lot of chances to finish the game. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro had chances to kill the game. At the back, we need to bring the goals down."

Ex-Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given, who is a pundit on Sunday's Match of the Day, described Martinez as a "brilliant signing".

"Martinez is interesting," Given told BBC Sport. "He's only just signed but Alonso's thought 'I'm not messing about, I'm getting him straight in the team'. The manager clearly thinks he needs someone of that sort of stature."

It was, ultimately, victory in chaos, but Alonso will need to find a way to control matches if Chelsea are to become title challengers, with a trip to Arsenal next.

1. throw sb straight into sth Having been thrown straight into the starting XI The new intern was thrown straight into the hardest project.

Robert Sanchez was clearly at fault for the first goal The driver was at fault for the accident.

3. a win is a win A win is a win," Martinez told Sky Sports 写作拓展:The match was ugly, but a win is a win.

Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro had chances to kill the game A second goal before half-time killed the game.

Just five hours after having his much-anticipated signing confirmed by Chelsea, Emiliano Martinez was walking out at Stamford Bridge to play for his new team against Brighton.

2. have sth done(让别人做/使某事被做)

There was little blame attached to the goalkeeper for any of the three goals conceded in their 4-3 victory, unlike on Monday, when Robert Sanchez was clearly at fault for the first goal, and arguably the second, in Chelsea's 3-2 win at Fulham.

There was little blame attached to the goalkeeper——little attached to the goalkeeper unlike on Monday 引出对比对象,后面 when 引导非限制性定语从句修饰 Monday,从句内部又塞了插入语 and arguably the second(且恐怕第二个也赖他)。

4. 复习:arguably(布鲁诺第1期学过)

Having been thrown straight into the starting XI by manager Xabi Alonso, however, it quickly became clear that he alone cannot solve their defensive problems.

拆解:句首 Having been thrown... 主句 it quickly became clear that...

1. 现在分词完成被动式 Having been done(先于主句发生的被动动作)

2. it became clear that...(形式主语)

I'm not messing about"——阿隆索式发言:签约当天就上首发,毫不含糊。

(提示关键词:having been thrown / it quickly became clear / he alone)

1. B。 Just five hours after having his much-anticipated signing confirmed——官宣确认后五小时就上场了;C 是注册截止日,不是比赛日。

2. B。 their 4-3 victory + three goals conceded——赢球但丢了三球;A 输赢颠倒;C 张冠李戴,丢球主要不赖大马丁。

3. B。 Robert Sanchez was clearly at fault for the first goal——为富勒姆一役第一个失球背锅;"and arguably the second"说明第二个也大概率赖他,但 C、D 均无中生有。

4. B。 leaky 本义"漏水的",the leaky defence=漏勺防线,与后文 five goals conceded in two games 呼应——防线脆弱、老是丢球。

Having been thrown straight into the starting XI by manager Xabi Alonso, it quickly became clear to Martinez that he alone cannot solve their defensive problems.

1. "被……扔进首发" → Having been thrown straight into the starting XI(完成被动式分词作状语,straight 加强"直接")

2. "很快就明白" → it quickly became clear that...(形式主语结构)

3. "光靠他一个人" → he alone(alone 后置强调)

4. "解决不了" → cannot solve(情态动词否定)

a win is a win——"赢了就是赢了"。

英语里这类"循环论证式"金句还有 a deal is a deal(说定了就是说定了)、a rule is a rule(规矩就是规矩)——结构相同,语义里自带"不接受反驳"的霸气。四六级写作里写"结果导向",来一句 a win is a win 收尾,比 conclusion 那句套话有味得多。

1. The performance was poor, but a win is a win.

2. Don't complain about the exam paper — a score is a score.

3. Some say style matters, but in the end a win is a win.
